At Touchstone Rehabilitation & Health Center in Staten Island, NY, our chiropractic care team understands that pain can have a crippling effect on your ability to lead a full, active life. That’s why our chiropractic team is committed to doing everything possible to help you safely manage this pain without the need for invasive surgery or prescription painkillers. In the case of extreme pain that does not respond to conventional treatment, epidural steroid injections and chiropractic manipulation under anesthesia are two additional treatment options.
When combined with chiropractic adjustments, epidural spinal injections may be an effective pain management option for patients suffering from disc herniation. Chiropractic spinal manipulation combined with epidural steroid injection may also aid in the treatment of radiculopathy (arm pain and leg pain) if the spine is the origin of this pain. According to one study of 80 patients treated with chiropractic care and epidural spinal injections, there were zero adverse effects to spinal manipulation. Nearly half of all patients with lumbar spine pain showed temporary improvement, with an additional 37% showing significant improvement. Over half of all patients with cervical spine pain showed significant improvement.
Not all patients are good candidates for epidural injections. In general, our treatment preference is to try alternative, non-invasive treatment options first. Should these treatments not provide the desired level of pain relief, our chiropractor may then recommend combining epidural injections with chiropractic adjustments. These injections may help not only relieve pain, but also allow for safer chiropractic manipulation and enhance the benefits of physiotherapy treatments.
Spinal manipulation under anesthesia is another treatment option that can deliver enhanced pain relief. Manipulation under anesthesia (MUA) is a non-invasive procedure that is increasingly being offered for the management of neck pain, back pain, muscle spasms, joint pain, shortened muscles, and fibrous adhesions. MUA is considered to be a safe and effective treatment for relieving pain that is associated with cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine. During MUA, our chiropractor uses a combination of specific spinal manipulations and passive stretches to break up the fibrous adhesions and scar tissue surrounding the spine. These adhesions and scar tissue may be restricting mobility and triggering pain. Together with epidural injections and chiropractic adjustments, this combination of care can deliver an enhanced level of pain relief.
To learn more about the benefits of epidural steroids and chiropractic adjustments, including whether you are a good candidate for this treatment option, we recommend scheduling a diagnostic appointment with our Staten Island chiropractor at 718-356-9222. During a diagnostic appointment we can evaluate the extent of your injury and pain needs and determine the root cause for this pain. Should extremity pain, for example, be triggered by a misalignment in the spine, then chiropractic adjustments may be able to relieve the nerve compression that is triggering this pain. Together with epidural injections, we may be able to deliver an elevated level of pain relief.
